Centres of Excellence

Share:

Ireland’s economy is built on the pillars of an innovative and dynamic agricultural and food industry, one of the most vibrant ecosystems on the planet for software and IT development and a world-leading pharmaceutical and medical technology industry.

Science Foundation Ireland supports fundamental scientific and engineering research, with an emphasis on biotechnology, information and communications technology and sustainable energy technologies.

Ireland is also where some of the world’s biggest and best companies have located key, strategic research facilities. And in Ireland, you’ll find a unique ecosystem that sees academic researchers working hand-in-hand with small home-grown and start-up companies in partnership with some of the most powerful multinationals on the planet through a programme for shared research projects developed by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland.

Excellence: Seven Centres for Science, Engineering & Technology combine outstanding research quality with intellectual breadth, active collaboration, flexibility in responding to new research opportunities and integration of research and education. They focus on the semantic web, adaptive nanoscience, telecommunications, sensor technology, software engineering, next-generation localisation, alimentary pharmacology, biomedical diagnostics and systems biology.

ICT and Life Science Clustering: 18 Strategic Research Clusters bring together outstanding researchers to carry out joint research to address crucial and strategically important research questions, foster the development of new technology companies and grow partnerships with industry in the areas of life science and ICT.

Sustainable Energy: Ireland hosts the International Energy Research Centre, an industry led, world-leading, collaborative programme, bringing together international companies and researchers in integrated sustainable energy system technologies.  Ireland is also home to seven centres supported through the Charles Parson Energy Research Awards. |

Bioprocessing:NIBRT, the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training, is a global centre of excellence for training and research in bioprocessing.

Industry collaborations: Ireland’s 13 Applied Research Enhancement (ARE) Centres develop next-generation technology platforms for industry and engage in collaborative projects with companies. They focus on ICT and software, bio-life sciences and pharmaceuticals and bio-medical devices and materials.

Our Technology Centres bring academia and industry together to solve real-life problems, identified by groups of companies drawn from indigenous industry and our rich base of multinational corporations. Eleven Technology Centres focus on biorefining and bioenergy, food for health, IT innovation, applied nanotechnology, composite materials, microelectronics, manufacturing research, energy efficiency for industry, e-learning innovation and cloud computing. And these are soon to be joined by four new centres in the areas of financial services, connected health, data analytics and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
